Top 12 Marketing Tactics For Coaches To Get More Clients

Excerpted and adapted from Rich Coach • Broke Coach by Bart Smith

Knowing how to coach is one skill set. Knowing how to MARKET your coaching business is another.

Many talented coaches struggle because the people who need them simply do not know they exist. Marketing fixes that problem. It creates visibility, builds familiarity, demonstrates expertise and gives potential clients a reason to begin a conversation.

If I had to narrow the many marketing ideas available to coaches down to twelve strong starting points, these would be at the top of the list.

  • 1. Email Newsletter Marketing — Build an email list you control. Regular newsletters allow you to stay in direct contact with prospects and clients without depending entirely on social media algorithms.

  • 2. Content Marketing — Publish useful articles, guides, tips and educational content that answer the real questions your ideal clients are already asking.

  • 3. Referral Marketing — Happy clients and trusted contacts can create warm introductions. Make it easy for people to understand who you help and who they should send your way.

  • 4. Social Media Marketing — Use social platforms to share useful insights, stories, short lessons and examples that keep your expertise visible over time.

  • 5. Lead Magnet & Funnel Marketing — Offer a useful checklist, guide, assessment or mini-training in exchange for an email address, then continue educating and nurturing that prospect.

  • 6. Video Marketing — Let potential clients see and hear you. Video communicates personality, teaching style and confidence in a way text alone often cannot.

  • 7. Webinar / Virtual Event Marketing — Teach something useful live. Webinars and online workshops allow prospects to experience your coaching style before deciding whether to work with you.

  • 8. Interview Marketing — Appear on podcasts, YouTube channels, blogs, radio programs and other media outlets. Borrowed audiences can introduce you to thousands of new people.

  • 9. Podcasting — Host your own show or appear as a guest. Long-form conversations help audiences get to know your ideas, philosophy and personality.

  • 10. Book Marketing — Publishing a book can elevate your authority and give you a powerful credibility tool for attracting interviews, speaking engagements and coaching clients.

  • 11. Strategic Partnership / JV Marketing — Collaborate with professionals who serve the same audience. Joint webinars, interviews, workshops and cross-promotions can dramatically expand your reach.

  • 12. Speaking & Training — Speak at events, conferences, associations, networking groups and workshops. A strong presentation puts your expertise directly in front of potential clients.

You Do NOT Need To Do All 12 At Once

One of the quickest ways to become overwhelmed is to try every marketing tactic at the same time.

Pick three to five tactics that fit your strengths, your audience and your current resources. Learn them. Use them consistently. Track what produces leads and clients. Once those tactics begin working reliably, add another.

ABM: Always Be Marketing

Marketing should not be something you remember to do only when your calendar is empty. Build it into the routine of the business.

Create a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly marketing plan. Keep publishing. Keep following up. Keep asking for referrals. Keep getting interviewed. Keep building your audience.

The goal is simple: become visible enough, useful enough and credible enough that the right people repeatedly encounter your name, your ideas and your solutions.

Great coaching can change a client's life. Great marketing makes sure those clients can actually find you.
