So, you’ve met someone interesting. They are attractive, funny, intelligent, and seem to check every box on your romantic wishlist. But then, something happens. They say or do something that makes you pause and wonder: Is this something I can truly live with?

Welcome to the complex world of dating deal-breakers.

In my book, Where Are You? & Where Art Thou?, I identify 109 potential relationship deal-breakers. These cover everything from dishonesty and controlling behavior to personal habits, financial irresponsibility, and incompatible long-term goals.

However, it is crucial to understand that not every difference warrants a goodbye, just as not every problem deserves another chance. Knowing the distinction can save you an extraordinary amount of time, frustration, money, and heartache.

Let’s explore when you should consider walking away—and when a little flexibility might actually serve you better.

Where Are You? & Where Art Thou? by Bart Smith

  • FIRST, KNOW YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES!

Let’s begin with the non-negotiables: dishonesty, abuse, controlling behavior, infidelity, threats, intimidation, and repeated disrespect. These are not trivial personality quirks. If someone repeatedly lies to you, violates your boundaries, attempts to control your life, or behaves abusively, you are facing a serious issue that requires your immediate attention.

Never confuse putting up with unacceptable behavior with being a loving, understanding partner. In my book, I encourage readers to establish their own non-negotiables before getting deeply involved with someone. Know what you will never tolerate. If you encounter abusive or threatening behavior, always prioritize your safety and seek appropriate support. Love should never require you to surrender your safety, freedom, or self-respect.

  • SOME DIFFERENCES REQUIRE SERIOUS DISCUSSION!

Next, let’s move into the category of major life alignments: marriage, children, finances, career aspirations, geography, and expectations around monogamy and commitment. These are significant topics. Imagine you have spent six wonderful months dating someone. Then, one evening, you happily announce, "I can’t wait to have children someday!" only for your partner to respond, "Children? No way. Never."

Suddenly, you have a major conflict. Neither person is necessarily wrong, but your visions for the future are fundamentally incompatible. That is why I encourage readers to discuss these crucial relationship goals early on, rather than waiting until they are deeply emotionally invested. Compatibility isn't just about enjoying today; it's about whether you can actually build a life together.

  • LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DEAL BREAKER AND A PERSONAL PREFERENCE!

Now, let’s look at the areas where things can get a bit ridiculous: minor habits and personal preferences.

Maybe your date doesn't like your favorite movie. Perhaps they prefer the mountains while you love the beach. They like Italian food, you prefer Mexican; they enjoy country music, and you'd rather listen to classical.

So what? Does every difference in taste need to become a relationship crisis? Of course not.

In my book, I discuss what I call "bendables" and "flexibles"—the traits and habits you should be willing to adjust or compromise on when evaluating a partner. You don't have to enjoy every single activity together, you don't need identical personalities, and you certainly don't need to agree on every restaurant, movie, or vacation destination.

Before making a minor difference a major issue, ask yourself: "Is this truly important to my long-term happiness, or am I just being picky?" You might be surprised by how many wonderful people are overlooked because of relatively insignificant differences.

  • PAY ATTENTION TO REPEATED BEHAVIOR!

One of the biggest mistakes people make while dating is overlooking troublesome patterns. Let’s say your date arrives late once. Things happen. But what if they are late every single time? What if they repeatedly cancel plans, ignore your messages, break promises, or treat your time as unimportant? At some point, you have to ask yourself whether you are witnessing an occasional inconvenience or a recurring pattern of disrespect.

When a pattern emerges, pay close attention to this crucial question: When you bring up a problem, how does the other person respond? Do they listen, take responsibility, and make a genuine effort to improve? Or do they blame you, make excuses, and repeat the same behavior anyway? Evaluate actions over words. Someone saying they will change is one thing; actually changing is something else entirely.

  • KNOW WHEN COMPROMISE MAKES SENSE!

Healthy relationships require cooperation. Sometimes you will do something simply because it makes your mate happy, and other times they will do the same for you. That is the essence of a healthy partnership.

Perhaps you attend a concert for an artist you don't care for because your partner loves them. The next weekend, they join you for an activity you enjoy. Everyone gets a turn. However, compromise must always be voluntary, reasonable, and mutual. If one person is constantly sacrificing while the other refuses to make adjustments, the dynamic is unbalanced. Compromise should help two people enjoy life together, not force one person to live entirely on the other's terms.

  • AND WHEN IT'S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE? DO IT!

Sometimes, no matter how attractive, charming, or exciting someone may be, a relationship simply isn't right for you. Your values might differ too much, the attraction might not be mutual, your future goals might conflict, or you may have discovered behavior you are simply unwilling to accept.

That is perfectly okay. You are entirely entitled to decide who you want in your life, and so is the other person.

When a relationship isn't working, the best approach is to bow out gracefully. You do not need to create a dramatic confrontation or spend hours arguing about why things are ending. When it is safe and appropriate to do so, communicate your decision kindly and clearly. A simple message is often best:

"I've enjoyed getting to know you, but I don't believe we're the right match. I sincerely wish you the best."

There is no need for a courtroom trial, personal insults, or unnecessary drama. However, if the relationship involves threats, coercion, or abuse, always make your safety the absolute priority rather than feeling obligated to have that conversation in person. Sometimes, the healthiest relationship decision you can make is to respectfully say, "Thank you, but this isn't for me."

FINAL WORD

Here is what I want you to remember: you do not have to accept everyone who wants to date you. Never ignore serious warning signs simply because someone is attractive or makes you feel special.

At the same time, avoid becoming so rigid that you reject wonderful people over minor preferences. My book contains 109 potential deal-breakers, but that doesn't mean every single one should automatically disqualify a partner. Some involve serious safety and character concerns, others involve personal compatibility, and many are things you might be perfectly happy to compromise on.

Know your non-negotiables, identify your flexibles, recognize troubling patterns, and make informed decisions. The ultimate goal isn’t to find a flawless human being. It is to find someone whose qualities you appreciate, whose differences you can respect, and who wants to build a wonderful relationship with you.

And if someone repeatedly demonstrates behavior you simply cannot accept? Well, as I like to say: "Uh, bye!"
