The 40–50-Year Question: Why Wait To Retire?

Let's do a little math, shall we? Suppose you begin working full-time in your early twenties, putting in approximately 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, for the next 40 years. By the time you're finished, you'll have spent approximately 80,000 HOURS OF YOUR LIFE WORKING! Extend that career to 50 years, and we're talking about approximately 100,000 HOURS! And that's before we count commuting, getting ready for work, overtime, business trips, and all those Sunday evenings spent thinking about Monday morning! HAHA!

Now, I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with working, having a career, or earning an honest living. Work can be rewarding, financially satisfying, meaningful, and even FUN! I've spent decades building businesses, writing books, creating products, and pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities because I genuinely enjoy what I do. But that doesn't mean I believe everybody should automatically accept spending 40 or 50 years working simply because that's what most people have traditionally done. Especially when a little financial education, planning, and discipline might help them accomplish something considerably different.

Retire Before You're Supposed To Retire by Bart Smith

Think about it. Who decided that you should spend most of your adult life working and then, if you're financially prepared, finally retire when you're considerably older? Why should you automatically accept that timetable without investigating whether your own financial circumstances could eventually allow you to retire sooner? And what if you could make better decisions NOW that might eliminate five, ten, fifteen, or even more years from your expected working life? Wouldn't that be worth exploring before another decade slips away?

  • THE TRADITIONAL ROAD ISN'T THE ONLY ROAD!

For generations, people have been encouraged to follow a familiar sequence: Finish school, get an education, find a job, work hard, earn promotions, pay bills, raise a family, save whatever you can, and eventually retire. There's nothing inherently wrong with that approach, and millions of people have built satisfying careers and meaningful lives following it. But here's where I start questioning conventional thinking.

WHAT IF THERE'S A BETTER FINANCIAL PATH FOR YOU?

What if the choices you're making today could dramatically influence how many years you'll actually NEED to continue working?

Consider how many people make major financial decisions simply because those decisions are considered normal. They attend expensive colleges without thoroughly investigating the likely financial return, finance automobiles that consume substantial portions of their income, purchase homes at the upper limits of what lenders will approve, and accumulate monthly obligations without considering their long-term consequences. Meanwhile, retirement remains something they'll supposedly worry about when they're older.

But shouldn't retirement planning influence some of those decisions BEFORE the bills, loans, and financial obligations begin piling up?

The same thinking applies to almost every major financial decision throughout your life. Perhaps you love your expensive automobile, enjoy your oversized house, or find tremendous satisfaction in the career you've chosen. Wonderful! But have you examined what those choices cost you over time and whether they support or interfere with your retirement goals?

Sometimes the best decision isn't the one that impresses everybody around you. It's the one that quietly improves your financial future.

As I like to say, "Just because everybody else is traveling the same financial road doesn't mean it's the best road for YOU!"

FINAL WORD

Retirement isn't automatically guaranteed because you've reached a certain birthday. Your savings, expenses, investments, income, and financial responsibilities all matter. The important thing is to begin exploring your options while you still have time to influence them. WHY WORK YOUR WHOLE LIFE WITHOUT INVESTIGATING WHETHER YOU COULD RETIRE SOONER?
