📖 Why Bart Wrote His Cookbook (Who's Hungry?) & How To Use It
Excerpted and adapted from the book Who's Hungry? by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission.
SERIOUSLY, WHY DID I WRITE A COOKBOOK? Great question! It's not like there aren't already thousands of cookbooks written by professional chefs, nutritionists, cooking instructors, and people who have spent their entire lives studying the culinary arts. So, what makes a fellow like me, who never attended culinary school and doesn't possess a collection of fancy cooking certificates, decide to publish a full-color cookbook of his own? Well, for starters, I happen to LOVE FOOD, I enjoy preparing delicious meals, and over the years, friends and family members have repeatedly encouraged me to share the recipes behind some of my favorite dishes.
And here's something else I've learned from years of cooking and baking: YOU DON'T NEED A CULINARY DEGREE TO BECOME REALLY GOOD AT PREPARING FOOD THAT PEOPLE LOVE TO EAT! I've been baking chocolate chip cookies for decades without attending pastry school, and I've enjoyed watching people's reactions when they taste something I've made and immediately ask whether they can have more. Those experiences are incredibly rewarding, and they inspired me to share the recipes, techniques, and practical cooking tips I've developed through years of experimentation. If you've ever wanted to become more comfortable in the kitchen, perhaps my experiences will encourage you to give it a try yourself.
THREE REASONS I LOVE COOKING THE WAY I DO
MY FIRST INSPIRATION WAS MY MOM, WHO COULD TURN ORDINARY INGREDIENTS INTO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY! Growing up, I watched her prepare wonderful meals that made sitting down for dinner one of the highlights of our day. She had a natural ability to combine ingredients, seasonings, and preparation techniques in ways that made everything taste fantastic. And although I certainly didn't inherit every ounce of her talent, I learned enough from watching her to develop a lifelong appreciation for flavorful home cooking. To this day, whenever I prepare something especially delicious, I appreciate how much that early inspiration helped shape my interests.
THE SECOND REASON IS EVEN SIMPLER: I COOK WHAT I LOVE TO EAT! Rather than filling my cookbook with complicated dishes I've never personally enjoyed, I selected favorites I've prepared repeatedly for myself and others. Some are quick and simple, while others involve a little more preparation, but they all earned their place because I genuinely enjoy making and eating them. From pizza and salads to Pad Thai noodles, smoothies, omelettes, and sweet potatoes, these are the kinds of meals that make me look forward to walking into the kitchen. And if you're anything like me, the prospect of preparing something delicious can be a mighty powerful motivator!
THE THIRD REASON INVOLVES FUELING MY BODY FOR THE DEMANDS OF A BUSY LIFE. Between writing books, developing business projects, producing videos, working on my websites, and pursuing other interests, my days can become long and demanding. I've always valued having foods available that I enjoy eating while also giving some attention to variety, ingredients, and my overall eating habits. That doesn't mean every dish I prepare qualifies as a specially designed health-food masterpiece, and I'm certainly not presenting myself as a medical or nutritional expert. I simply appreciate being able to choose what goes into my meals rather than leaving every decision to somebody else's kitchen.
WHY THIS COOKBOOK IS DIFFERENT
My objective with Who's Hungry? is straightforward: to share a collection of personal favorites I've enjoyed preparing for years and show you how to make them yourself. These aren't dishes selected merely because they're fashionable or impressive-looking. They're meals my friends and family have requested repeatedly, complimented enthusiastically, and sometimes practically demanded that I prepare whenever we get together. When somebody tells me that my pizza, salad, smoothie, or noodle dish is one of the best they've ever tasted, I don't mind admitting that it puts a rather large smile on my face!
But I wanted my cookbook to accomplish more than simply display beautiful photographs and list ingredients. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED, WHAT TO BUY, HOW TO PREPARE IT, AND WHAT TO DO WHEN IT'S TIME TO START COOKING! That's why the cookbook includes helpful kitchen equipment information, practical preparation notes, and links to videos and online recipes. I've even expanded the material on my website with additional photographs and instructions, because I know that many people learn more easily when they can actually WATCH somebody prepare a dish.
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF MY COOKBOOK
START BY EXPLORING THE ENTIRE MENU BEFORE YOU FIRE UP THE STOVE! Look through the breakfast, lunch, dinner, and party sections, and make note of the dishes that immediately capture your attention. Perhaps you're craving homemade pizza, a fluffy omelette, a refreshing smoothie, or something you've never attempted to prepare before. Choose a few favorites and decide which you'd like to make first, second, and third. Having a short list of recipes you genuinely want to try will make the entire learning experience more exciting, especially when you know something delicious is waiting at the finish line.
NEXT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT BEFORE YOU BEGIN COOKING. My cookbook includes recommendations for pots, frying pans, blenders, a toaster oven, rice cooker, air fryer, kitchen utensils, and other helpful tools. You don't need to rush out and purchase everything at once, and you certainly don't need to spend a fortune creating a fancy kitchen. Review the recipes you want to make, check which tools you already own, and shop around for anything you're missing. I've found useful kitchen supplies at major retailers, discount stores, Asian markets, and online shops, so take your time and look for good value.
THEN, COMBINE THE WRITTEN RECIPES WITH MY COOKING VIDEOS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Each recipe provides information about ingredients and preparation, but watching a demonstration can make the process much easier to understand. Seeing how ingredients are handled, how a meal comes together, and what the finished dish should look like can eliminate much of the uncertainty beginners sometimes experience. Read through the recipe, gather your equipment, prepare your ingredients, and then follow along with the relevant video or online instructions. Before long, what once seemed unfamiliar can become part of your regular cooking routine.
AND FINALLY, PRACTICE UNTIL YOUR FAVORITE DISHES TASTE THE WAY YOU WANT THEM TO TASTE! Not every cooking experiment produces a masterpiece on the first attempt, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with adjusting ingredients, preparation times, or seasonings until you're satisfied. I've experimented with my own meals repeatedly over the years, and many became favorites because I kept refining the little details. Most of these dishes are not rocket science, gentlemen and ladies. With some patience, a little practice, and a willingness to learn, you'll soon become much more comfortable preparing wonderful meals in your own kitchen.
FINAL WORD
I wrote Who's Hungry? because I wanted to share the foods that have brought me years of enjoyment, the personal techniques I've developed, and the pleasure that comes from preparing something wonderful for yourself and the people you care about. There's something special about sitting down to a delicious homemade meal, especially when you've put in the effort to make it exactly the way you like. And when friends or family members ask you to prepare it again, you know you've accomplished something worth repeating.
MY ADVICE? DON'T JUST READ THE COOKBOOK—USE THE DARN THING! Select a recipe, gather your ingredients, watch the corresponding cooking video if one is available, and give it your best shot. Tweak a few ingredients if necessary, create your own variations, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you prepared something delicious with your own two hands. And when it's time to sit down and enjoy your masterpiece, there's only one appropriate thing left for me to say: BART APPÉTIT!
