📖 SEX: With Multiple Men For Too Many Years (The Downsides)

Excerpted and adapted from Watch Out Ladies book by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission.

Ladies, here is a question to consider: When you look back at the men you’ve dated or been intimate with over the years, have those experiences actually brought you closer to the love and commitment you genuinely want? Or have some of them just left you wondering why you invested so much time, affection, and emotional energy into someone who never intended to marry you?

In Chapter Two of Watch Out Ladies, I dive into a topic that can feel a bit uncomfortable: the cycle of spending years in intimate relationships without ever finding the lasting partnership you’ve been hoping for.

I’m not saying every woman shares the same romantic goals, nor am I suggesting that a colorful relationship history disqualifies you from finding love. But if your ultimate dream is to find a faithful husband, build a loving home, and raise a family, shouldn't your dating choices actively move you toward that future?

Ladies, it’s time to choose quality over quantity!

  • WHEN ATTRACTION GETS MISTAKEN FOR LOVE!

We’ve all experienced the excitement of meeting someone who makes your heart race—a man who is handsome, charming, confident, and exactly your type. When you begin spending time together and the chemistry takes over, it’s easy to quickly become emotionally involved.

But it’s crucial to pause and ask yourself an important question: Does he actually want a serious relationship? Is he interested in your values, your dreams, your family, and your future, or is he simply enjoying the physical benefits of your company?

Distinguishing between these two intentions is vital. In my book, I encourage women to truly get acquainted with a man before becoming sexually involved, especially if emotional commitment is what they ultimately want. While sexual attraction is exciting, it doesn't automatically build trust, faithfulness, compatibility, or a shared desire for marriage. Love and lust are not the same thing, and when a woman is looking for a lifetime partner while a man is only looking for a temporary connection, heartbreak and disappointment are almost sure to follow.

  • YOU CAN'T PUT A CONDOM ON YOUR HEART!

One of my favorite observations in this chapter is that you can't put a condom on your heart to protect it from getting hurt. While physical precautions can reduce certain health risks, they can't guarantee that the person you're becoming intimate with will love you, remain faithful, or want a future with you.

While some women are genuinely comfortable with casual relationships, many others discover that physical intimacy creates deeper emotional expectations than they anticipated. Serious problems arise when two people have entirely different intentions but never talk about them. Too often, a woman begins imagining a future together while he is still dating other people, or he calls only when he wants affection but disappears the moment she mentions commitment. Eventually, she is left wondering if the relationship ever meant the same thing to him.

Ladies, if you’ve experienced that kind of disappointment before, why keep repeating the same pattern? Take the time to get to know the man first. Observe his behavior, ask what he wants, and believe what his actions reveal—especially when they don't match his words.

  • THERE ARE PHYSICAL RISKS TO CONSIDER, TOO!

Chapter Two also addresses the vital topics of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and reproductive health—matters that both men and women must take seriously. Exposure to STIs depends on many factors, including sexual practices, barrier protection, testing habits, and exposure history. Because many infections show no noticeable symptoms, leaving them untreated can lead to serious, long-term reproductive complications.

That is why it only makes sense to discuss sexual health openly, get tested regularly, and understand your options for protection. A man’s appearance, profession, charm, or past relationships will never tell you what you actually need to know about his health status.

And gentlemen, this responsibility belongs to you, too. You cannot expect a woman to protect herself while you ignore your own obligation to be honest, informed, and considerate.

  • WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE MEMORIES?

Here is something else I discuss in the book: the emotional memories we carry from previous relationships. I often say, "You cannot reformat your brain like you can a computer hard drive." Life simply doesn't come with a convenient delete button that erases every painful experience we would rather forget. A disappointing relationship, betrayal, broken promises, or becoming attached to someone who never intended to stay can all leave lasting emotional scars.

Of course, many people treasure their past experiences and move into new relationships with healthy perspectives. The important thing is to recognize how your specific history affects you today. If casual dating repeatedly leaves you feeling unhappy, disappointed, or emotionally exhausted, it is a clear sign that it’s time to change how you approach your love life.

FINAL WORD

Ladies, the objective isn't to spend your life counting how many men you've dated or comparing yourself to anyone else. It’s about deciding what kind of love life you genuinely want—and then making choices that align with that goal.

If you are seeking marriage, look for a man who wants marriage. If faithfulness matters, date someone who actively demonstrates it. If becoming a mother is one of your dreams, discuss family plans with a man who is genuinely interested in building that future with you. Never confuse temporary excitement with lasting commitment.

Go for quality over quantity. Choose love over lust. Find a man who wants to stay, not just visit. Your heart, your health, and your future deserve that consideration.
