Don't Just Retire FROM Something. Have Something Worth Retiring TO!
Folks, imagine something wonderful has happened. You've worked hard, learned how to manage your finances, accumulated appropriate assets, and finally reached a point where you no longer depend entirely on a regular paycheck. You wake up on Monday morning, look at the clock, and realize there's no boss waiting for you, no commute ahead, and no mandatory work schedule.
BOOOOOOYAH! YOU'RE RETIRED!
But then Tuesday comes. Wednesday comes. A few months pass, and you begin wondering what you're supposed to do with all this newly available time.
HAHAHAHA! DID YOU REMEMBER TO CREATE A LIFE TO GO ALONG WITH YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN?
Here's something I want you to consider. RETIREMENT ISN'T JUST ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH MONEY TO STOP WORKING. IT'S ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH PURPOSE, INTERESTS, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENJOY THE LIFE YOU'VE WORKED SO HARD TO CREATE!
THE 6 INGREDIENTS OF A RETIREMENT WORTH LIVING!
1. YOUR HEALTH! Identify one sustainable habit involving exercise, nutrition, sleep, or appropriate preventive healthcare.
2. YOUR RELATIONSHIPS! Make regular time for the people whose company and support you value.
3. YOUR INTERESTS! List five activities you'd like to investigate before or during retirement.
4. YOUR SENSE OF PURPOSE! Identify one way your experience could benefit another person or your community.
5. YOUR FINANCIAL PEACE OF MIND! Develop a retirement lifestyle budget that includes enjoyment while respecting your long-term resources.
6. YOUR CONTINUED GROWTH! Choose one subject, skill, or project you'd love to learn simply because it interests you.
Retirement doesn't have to mean retiring your brain!
TEST-DRIVE YOUR RETIREMENT BEFORE YOU RETIRE!
Here's something I think could prevent considerable disappointment. Instead of imagining what retirement will feel like, experiment with elements of your desired lifestyle while you're still working. Take an available vacation or several days off and pay attention to how you use your time, what activities you enjoy, and whether your estimated spending matches reality.
Perhaps you'll discover that you love traveling but don't enjoy being away from home for months. Maybe you'd prefer occasional consulting over complete retirement, or perhaps you'll realize that community involvement is more rewarding than purchasing another expensive possession.
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO LEARN WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY BEFORE BUILDING YOUR ENTIRE RETIREMENT AROUND AN UNTESTED FANTASY!
FINAL WORD
There isn't one perfect retirement lifestyle everybody must follow. What matters is developing enough financial security to make more of those decisions according to your own values and circumstances. THE REAL REWARD ISN'T JUST RETIRING EARLY. IT'S HAVING MORE FREEDOM TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT!
