BOOK EXCERPT
📖 Mr. Perfect vs. Mr. He’s Good Enough (“Yes, I Will …”)
Excerpted and adapted from Watch Out Ladies book by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission.
Ladies, the objective isn't to spend your life counting how many men you've dated or comparing yourself to anyone else. It’s about deciding what kind of love life you genuinely want—and then making choices that align with that goal.
If you are seeking marriage, look for a man who wants marriage. If faithfulness matters, date someone who actively demonstrates it. If becoming a mother is one of your dreams, discuss family plans with a man who is genuinely interested in building that future with you. Never confuse temporary excitement with lasting commitment.
Remember, a man who is serious about a future with you will respect your boundaries and match your pace. He won't pressure you to rush into intimacy before trust has been established, because he understands that a lifelong partnership is built on a foundation that outlasts temporary passion.
Go for quality over quantity. Choose love over lust. Find a man who wants to stay, not just visit. Your heart, your health, and your future deserve that consideration.
NO MAN IS PERFECT! AND NEITHER ARE WE!
In Chapter Nine of Watch Out Ladies, the focus is on letting go of the pursuit of an imaginary, flawless partner in favor of recognizing someone with the qualities that sustain a lasting relationship. Everyone has imperfections, and holding onto an unrealistic checklist can cause you to overlook genuine love and compatibility. While serious red flags like dishonesty or abuse should never be ignored, distinguishing between major dealbreakers and minor, human quirks is essential for building a strong, realistic partnership.
THINK ABOUT BUYING YOUR DREAM HOME!
Here is an analogy from the book to help put this into perspective. Imagine you are shopping for a house. After touring dozens of properties, you quickly realize that none of them are absolutely perfect; one has a gorgeous kitchen but a tiny backyard, while another has beautiful bedrooms but needs fresh paint. Eventually, you find a house that simply feels right—a place where you can genuinely picture yourself building a life and entertaining friends. So, you buy it, move in, and begin making it your own. Over time, you add personal touches, invest your energy, and do the work required to turn that house into a true home.
Relationships often develop in the exact same way. Two people meet, discover they share core values, fall in love, and gradually learn how to build a life together. Of course, a man is not a remodeling project—you can’t just pick a partner and try to change everything about him. But when two people genuinely want to grow together, they naturally learn, compromise, and become increasingly wonderful for each other over time. The goal isn’t to find someone who is flawless; it’s to find someone who is willing to do the work to be perfect for you.
LOOK FOR THE QUALITIES THAT LAST!
In my book, I outline ten essential qualities every woman should look for in a partner. Among them are ambition, dependability, faithfulness, kindness, patience, a good sense of humor, affection, and a genuine desire to support the woman he loves. I also emphasize the critical importance of a man who truly listens. Imagine coming home after an exhausting day and having your partner look at you and say, "Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it? Come on, let's sit down." Now that is a wonderful quality.
Imagine being married to a man who knows exactly how to make you laugh when everything seems to be going wrong. A partner who is faithful, affectionate, dependable, and standing right by your side when life gets difficult offers something far more valuable than someone whose greatest attributes are just his income or his appearance. If your ultimate goal is marriage and children, make sure he actively wants those things, too. A handsome face will never compensate for a man who has no desire to become your husband when a lifelong commitment is what you deeply want.
SOMETIMES THE LITTLE THINGS ARE THE BIG THINGS!
One of my favorite observations in this chapter centers on what a woman might appreciate most at the end of a long day: hugs, kisses, and meaningful conversation. Imagine having a husband who loves holding you close, enjoys talking with you before falling asleep, and makes you feel deeply appreciated throughout your marriage. Would you really trade that for a handsome millionaire who rarely comes home, ignores your feelings, and has little interest in spending quality time together? Perhaps it is time to reconsider which qualities truly deserve the top spots on your dating checklist.
But remember, ladies, love is a two-way street. The man you are hoping to meet has his own feelings, dreams, and expectations. It's important to ask yourself: What are you bringing into his life? How will you support, encourage, appreciate him, and contribute to a happy, thriving marriage? The absolute best relationships are built when both partners are fully invested in making each other's lives better.
FINAL WORD
Ladies, never lower your standards for the qualities that matter most. Keep expecting honesty, kindness, faithfulness, respect, emotional maturity, and compatible plans for your future. At the same time, don't allow an unrealistic checklist of superficial preferences to keep you from recognizing a wonderful man who might be standing right in front of you. When you feel comfortable, give a good man the chance to get to know you. Ask meaningful questions, and pay closer attention to his character than his possessions.
When you finally meet a good man who loves you, shares your values, and wants to build a beautiful life by your side, don't dismiss him simply because he doesn't match the imaginary fellow you've been chasing for years. Mr. Perfect may never arrive, but Mr. Right for Me just might. And wouldn't it be absolutely wonderful to hear him ask that beautiful question someday, and be able to answer with a smile, "Yes, I will!"
