📖 Healthy Meals Inside My Fitness Book: What’s For Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner At Bart’s House?
Excerpted and adapted from the book ISN'T IT TIME YOU Lose Weight & Get In Shape TOO!!! by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission.
WHO SAYS EATING HEALTHY HAS TO BE BORING, COMPLICATED, EXPENSIVE, OR TASTE LIKE SOMETHING YOU'D RATHER FEED YOUR DOG? NOT ME! I love food, I love cooking, and I LOVE EATING! In fact, I've spent decades developing my own favorite meals, experimenting with ingredients, and discovering delicious ways to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And because I'm also a former championship athlete who believes in staying physically active, I've always appreciated the importance of eating foods that can support my health and fitness goals.
That's exactly why I devoted an entire section of my book, Lose Weight & Get In Shape!!!, to the meals I personally make and enjoy at home. I'm a busy guy with books to write, businesses to run, videos to produce, cookies to bake, and a million other things competing for my time.
I DON'T WANT TO SPEND THREE HOURS IN THE KITCHEN EVERY TIME I'M HUNGRY! My goal is to prepare meals that are reasonably quick, satisfying, packed with flavor, and made with plenty of fresh ingredients. I enjoy using my stovetop, frying pans, oven, toaster oven, grill, blender, and other basic kitchen equipment rather than relying on microwave cooking.
And here's something else you should know: I ACTUALLY MAKE AND EAT THESE DISHES! They're not random recipes I borrowed to fill pages in a fitness book. They're personal favorites, many of which I've prepared for friends, family members, clients, and guests over the years. Some are especially useful when I want to emphasize nutritious ingredients and moderate portions, while others are more substantial meals I enjoy occasionally. The recipes themselves are also featured in my full-color cookbook, Who's Hungry?, where I show readers how to make their own versions.

1. BART'S APPLE, BANANA OR A SIMPLE FRUIT BOWL
Sometimes the best breakfast is also the easiest! I like slicing fresh apples, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, pineapple, or whatever fruit I'm in the mood for and enjoying a delicious bowl of natural goodness. It's quick, refreshing, provides fiber and other valuable nutrients, and doesn't require cooking anything. MY FAVORITE APPLES? FUJI! TRY 'EM!
2. BART'S PERSONAL PROTEIN SHAKE
When I'm busy and need something quick, I'll whip up a shake in my blender using cold water, a banana, frozen blueberries, protein powder, almonds, and sometimes greens, flaxseed, or other optional ingredients. It takes only a few minutes to prepare, provides protein and other nutrients depending on what I include, and tastes terrific when those frozen berries blend everything together. BLEND, POUR, DRINK, AND GET BACK TO WORK!
3. BART'S JUICING RECIPES
I've been juicing fresh fruits and vegetables for more than 25 years, and I love experimenting with different combinations and flavors. Inside my fitness book, I share nine of my favorite creations, including Eye Opener, Slim Figure, Berry Boat, Rainbow Explosion, Age Buster, Immune Booster, Green Machine, Get Your Apple & Greens, and Orange Raspberry Blast. Fresh juice can be a delicious way to enjoy a variety of produce, although I also make room for whole fruits and vegetables because their fiber is important.
4. BART'S "WORLD FAMOUS" OMELETTE
Oh, baby, this is one of my all-time favorite breakfast dishes! I start with eggs and customize my omelette with ingredients such as spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, colorful bell peppers, black beans, shredded cheese, and occasionally Italian sausage. Eggs provide protein, vegetables add variety and nutrients, and the final result is a hearty, delicious meal that can be adapted to your preferences and appetite.
5. BART'S "WORLD FAMOUS" SALAD
THIS ONE IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART! I've been making my personal salad for more than 20 years, and it's one of the first meals I return to when I want to improve my eating habits and trim down. I combine spinach, parsley, colorful vegetables, red grapes, dried cranberries, nuts, hemp seeds, and often grilled salmon, chicken, or tofu for a substantial meal filled with vegetables, protein, fiber, and flavor. THIS ISN'T ONE OF THOSE SAD LITTLE SALADS WITH THREE PIECES OF LETTUCE AND A LONELY TOMATO!
6. BBART'S "WORLD FAMOUS" SOUP
Another favorite when I'm concentrating on healthier eating is my hearty homemade-style soup, which I often alternate with my salads throughout the week. I'll begin with a favorite soup base, then add freshly chopped broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, beans, seasonings, and sometimes cooked chicken. It's warm, filling, versatile, and an easy way to enjoy more vegetables, especially when I choose a base with a reasonable amount of sodium.
7. BART'S "WORLD FAMOUS" SANDWICH
I developed this sandwich after spending plenty of money having somebody else make lunch for me at a deli in California. My version features whole-grain or pumpernickel bread, spinach, sprouts, turkey or ham, a slice of cheese, and a little mayonnaise, all warmed in my toaster oven until the bread is delicious and the cheese begins melting. WHO NEEDS AN EXPENSIVE DELI SANDWICH WHEN YOU CAN MAKE ONE THIS GOOD AT HOME?
8. BART'S FAVORITE CRAB QUICHE
This dish has a very special place in my heart because my mother used to make crab quiche for my birthday when I was growing up! My version combines eggs, crab or imitation crab, Swiss cheese, colorful peppers, green onions, seasonings, and a flaky pastry crust before baking everything in the oven. It's a rich, satisfying meal that provides protein from the eggs and crab, and I enjoy it occasionally with fruit or a salad. THANKS, MOM! YOU STARTED SOMETHING DELICIOUS THAT I'M STILL ENJOYING TODAY!
9. BART'S "WORLD FAMOUS" PIZZA
YES, FOLKS, I INCLUDED PIZZA IN MY FITNESS BOOK! HA-HA! I developed my pizza-making method back in 1995, using a cheese-only pizza as the foundation and customizing it with fresh mushrooms, colorful bell peppers, real pineapple, and optional toppings such as turkey pepperoni and precooked Italian sausage. This is one of my more indulgent favorites, so portions and topping choices matter, but I love that I can prepare it myself, add plenty of vegetables, and enjoy the incredible flavors without relying entirely on restaurant takeout.
10. BART'S SALMON & STEAMED VEGETABLES
NOW THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEALS WHEN I'M SERIOUS ABOUT EATING RIGHT! I'll prepare salmon in my oven, toaster oven, or frying pan, steam broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, and sometimes add a side of seasoned black beans. Salmon provides protein and omega-3 fats, while the vegetables and beans contribute fiber and other nutrients. SIMPLE INGREDIENTS, A LITTLE SEASONING, AND ONE HECK OF A DELICIOUS DINNER!
11. BART'S SAUTÉED SWEET POTATOES
If you haven't experimented with sautéed sweet potatoes, you're missing out on something DELICIOUS! I slice them into pieces, sauté them with seasonings, add crushed pecans, and combine them with vegetables, black beans, and sometimes salmon or chicken. Sweet potatoes offer fiber and beta-carotene, and I love how their natural sweetness complements the other flavors. Adjust the cooking oil and serving size to fit your own meal plan.
OH, MY WORD, THESE THINGS ARE ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY! I grill seasoned chicken thighs, combine them with BBQ sauce, and serve them inside warm tortillas with sautéed colorful bell peppers, optional Mexican rice, black beans, and melted cheese. The chicken and beans contribute protein, the peppers add color and nutrients, and the combination tastes so good that I devoted an entire recipe section to it. WATCH YOUR PORTIONS, CHOOSE YOUR BBQ SAUCE THOUGHTFULLY, AND ENJOY THE FLAVOR EXPLOSION!
Here's another creation that makes people say, "BART, WHERE DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS?" I sauté sweet potatoes with Southwest seasoning and crushed pecans, combine them with colorful bell peppers, onions, black beans, and herbs, then serve everything in warm tortillas with melted cheese and fresh salsa. This is a satisfying, vegetable-forward alternative to my chicken tacos, with plenty of fiber, flavor, and an incredible hot-and-cold combination when you add the salsa. TRUST ME, SWEET POTATOES INSIDE A BURRITO ARE A GAME CHANGER!
FINAL WORD
EATING HEALTHIER DOESN'T HAVE TO MEAN EATING BORING FOOD! That's one of the most important messages I wanted readers to take away from the meals section of my fitness book. I love creating colorful, satisfying dishes using fresh ingredients, simple preparation methods, and combinations I've refined over many years. Some are especially suitable for lighter meals, while others are delicious favorites that I enjoy in reasonable portions as part of my overall eating habits.
And if you're wondering where to find the actual ingredient measurements, step-by-step preparation instructions, and more photographs of my food, I'VE GOT AN ENTIRE COOKBOOK FOR YOU! It's called Who's Hungry?, and I put it together because I wanted people everywhere to discover how much fun it can be to prepare wonderful meals at home. SO, LET ME ASK YOU ONE VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ... WHO'S HUNGRY??? 🍳🥗🍕🔥
