📖 Common Sense Weight Loss & Fitness Tips
Excerpted and adapted from the book ISN'T IT TIME YOU Lose Weight & Get In Shape TOO!!! by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission.
WHEN DID EATING RIGHT, LOSING WEIGHT, AND GETTING INTO SHAPE BECOME SO DANG COMPLICATED? Everywhere you look, somebody is selling another miracle diet, special supplement, weight-loss program, or secret formula that's supposedly going to transform your body overnight. One minute you're told to eat this, the next minute you're told to avoid it, and before long you're standing in the grocery store wondering whether ANYTHING is good for you anymore! C'MON, FOLKS! HOW ABOUT A LITTLE COMMON SENSE?
That's one of the reasons I wrote Lose Weight & Get In Shape!!! I've spent much of my life involved in sports, fitness, and physical conditioning, including seven years of varsity football and two Illinois state championships in the hurdles. I also happen to LOVE food, enjoy cooking, and have baked approximately 250,000 chocolate chip cookies over the years. So believe me, I understand both sides of the equation! In the first two parts of my book, I share dozens of personal observations and healthy-living insights I've learned through experience, study, and occasionally eating considerably more than I should. HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITES!
1. LET FOOD BE OUR MEDICINE!
WHAT YOU PUT INTO YOUR BODY MATTERS! In the book, I discuss the importance of choosing foods that support your health instead of continually relying upon whatever happens to be convenient, heavily advertised, or sitting in the nearest drive-through window. Fruits, vegetables, wholesome ingredients, and a variety of nutritious foods deserve an important place in our daily lives. Good nutrition can support health and help prevent certain problems, although it shouldn't be mistaken for a replacement for necessary medical treatment. The important lesson is to take an active interest in what you're eating rather than waiting until poor habits catch up with you.
I also emphasize three simple principles: VARIETY, BALANCE & MODERATION! Variety encourages you to enjoy different foods, balance helps you build more sensible meals, and moderation reminds you that eating an enormous quantity of something isn't necessarily better than eating a reasonable amount. You don't need to turn every meal into a scientific experiment. Develop an appreciation for nutritious food, prepare meals you genuinely enjoy, and recognize when you've had enough. EAT TO LIVE WELL, NOT SIMPLY TO SEE HOW MUCH FOOD YOU CAN PUT AWAY!
2. CREATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL FOOD PYRAMID!
One of the more interesting sections of my book involves the traditional food pyramid and why I decided to create my own interpretation. I've never been especially fond of complicated nutritional diagrams that leave people wondering which foods deserve priority. So I put together a visual representation of what I personally value in my eating habits, including plenty of water, fruits, vegetables, and other foods that work for my lifestyle. THE POINT ISN'T THAT EVERYBODY SHOULD EAT EXACTLY WHAT I EAT. IT'S THAT EVERYBODY SHOULD THINK MORE CAREFULLY ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE EATING!
Your nutritional needs may differ depending upon your age, activity level, medical circumstances, and personal preferences. The goal is to develop an eating plan that is balanced, enjoyable, and appropriate for you rather than blindly following somebody else's routine. Personally, I like being able to look at my choices and ask whether they're helping me maintain the physical condition and energy I want. IF YOUR DAILY FOOD CHOICES ARE WORKING AGAINST YOUR GOALS, MAYBE IT'S TIME TO REARRANGE YOUR OWN FOOD PYRAMID!
3. GROCERY SHOPPING & AVOIDING B.S.!
NEVER GO GROCERY SHOPPING WHEN YOU'RE STARVING! HA-HA! I included that recommendation in my book because I know exactly what happens when I enter a grocery store hungry. Suddenly, EVERYTHING looks delicious! I'm practically planning dinner in the aisles, and those strategically placed candy bars at the checkout counter start calling my name. That's why I encourage readers to make shopping lists, establish budgets, purchase what they actually need, and avoid bringing home enormous quantities of foods they're trying to consume less often.
I also discuss reading labels, keeping your refrigerator stocked with useful ingredients, and recognizing how cleverly products are marketed to consumers. REMEMBER, SUPERMARKETS ARE DESIGNED TO SELL YOU FOOD, NOT MANAGE YOUR PERSONAL NUTRITION! Just because an item looks healthy, has attractive packaging, or includes a fashionable nutritional slogan doesn't mean it's automatically the best choice for you. Take a moment to examine what you're buying, compare products when appropriate, and develop shopping habits that support your goals rather than your impulses.
4. WATER, WATER, WATER!
Another one of my favorite subjects is something so simple that practically everybody has access to it: WATER! I devote an entire section of my book to the importance of staying hydrated, particularly when you're physically active or spending time outdoors. Personally, I enjoy water with fresh lemon because it adds a little flavor and makes drinking water more enjoyable. No, you don't need to purchase some expensive miracle beverage simply to stay hydrated, and lemon isn't a magic weight-loss ingredient. It's just one of the little things I enjoy incorporating into my routine.
I also encourage readers to pay attention to how many sweetened beverages they consume throughout the day. A few sodas, sweetened coffees, or other sugary drinks can contribute considerably to your overall intake without your giving them much thought. BEFORE YOU BUY ANOTHER DRINK THAT PROMISES TO TRANSFORM YOUR BODY, ASK YOURSELF WHETHER A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED GLASS OF WATER MIGHT DO THE JOB! Your hydration needs will vary, of course, but making water a convenient everyday choice is one habit worth considering.
5. FOOD SELECTION, PORTION SIZE, QUANTITY & FREQUENCY!
THIS IS WHERE A LITTLE HONESTY WITH YOURSELF CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! In the book, I discuss several considerations that can influence weight management: what you eat, how much you put on your plate, how many servings you consume, and how frequently you eat. It's easy to focus exclusively on whether a particular food is supposedly good or bad while overlooking the fact that you may be eating considerably more than you intended. A reasonable serving and three enormous helpings are two very different things!
Personally, I prefer being aware of my food choices and portions rather than turning every meal into a complicated mathematical assignment. I also encourage readers to examine their eating patterns and recognize situations that lead to unnecessary overeating. Maybe it's boredom, stress, eating while watching television, or simply ordering more food than you need. YOU CAN'T IMPROVE A HABIT YOU REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE! Pay attention to your personal patterns, make adjustments that are realistic for you, and remember that long-term weight management involves more than a single meal or an occasional indulgence.
6. QUIT FALLING FOR THE DIET & WEIGHT-LOSS COMMERCIAL B.S.!
"LOSE TEN POUNDS THIS WEEKEND!" "ORDER YOURSELF A SLIMMER WAISTLINE!" "SLEEP YOUR FAT AWAY!" You've probably encountered advertising like this, and I have a little fun with those kinds of promises in my book. I'm skeptical whenever somebody suggests that a product can replace all the practical habits involved in taking better care of yourself. There are legitimate medical treatments and professionally supervised programs for people who need them, but exaggerated advertising deserves scrutiny, especially when it promises extraordinary results without explaining the evidence, risks, or long-term requirements.
My personal philosophy has always been to concentrate on improving what I eat, how much I eat, and how regularly I exercise. I don't want to spend a fortune chasing every new product that hits the market, especially when there are useful habits I can begin developing right now. BEFORE YOU HAND OVER YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY FOR ANOTHER MIRACLE SOLUTION, DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND ASK WHETHER THE PROMISE IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! Developing sustainable habits may not sound as exciting as a television advertisement, but it's a far more useful foundation for everyday living.
7. DESIRE, INFORMATION & VISION: THREE IMPORTANT INGREDIENTS!
One of my favorite sections in Part 2 explains three ingredients I consider valuable when working toward a personal fitness goal: DESIRE, INFORMATION & VISION! First, you must genuinely WANT to improve your health or physical conditioning for reasons that matter to you. Second, you need useful information about food, exercise, and the habits that may be affecting your progress. Third, you need a VISION of what you're working toward—whether that's feeling stronger, having greater endurance, improving your mobility, or returning to a physical activity you once enjoyed.
I also believe in building upon your successes. When you've eaten well, exercised, accomplished a goal, or resisted an unnecessary temptation, recognize that progress and use it as motivation to keep going. You can even take a short walk after a meal, make time for an activity you enjoy, or find a friend who shares your interest in better fitness. THE OBJECTIVE ISN'T TO BECOME SOMEBODY ELSE. IT'S TO BECOME A HEALTHIER, STRONGER, MORE ACTIVE VERSION OF YOURSELF! Whatever your starting point, choose achievable steps and build upon them.
8. LOSING WEIGHT IS ONE THING. KEEPING IT OFF IS ANOTHER!
I also discuss something people sometimes overlook when setting weight-loss goals: WEIGHT MAINTENANCE! It's wonderful to see progress, but what happens when you've reached the weight or fitness level you wanted? Do you return to all your previous habits, abandon your workouts, and start celebrating with six enormous desserts every evening? HA-HA! Hopefully not! Maintaining your progress requires continuing the eating and activity habits that helped you get there, with appropriate adjustments as your circumstances change.
And remember, the bathroom scale doesn't tell the entire story. Changes in strength, endurance, mobility, energy, clothing fit, and everyday physical performance may also help you recognize improvements. DON'T BECOME SO OBSESSED WITH A NUMBER THAT YOU FORGET WHY YOU WANTED TO GET HEALTHIER IN THE FIRST PLACE! Build a lifestyle you can enjoy, evaluate how you're doing, and make adjustments when necessary. The ultimate goal is to take better care of yourself for years to come, not simply reach a temporary milestone.
FINAL WORD
COMMON SENSE, GOOD INFORMATION, BETTER FOOD CHOICES, REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY CAN GO A LONG WAY TOWARD BUILDING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE! That's the central message I wanted to communicate throughout the opening sections of my fitness book. You don't have to buy every new product, follow every passing trend, or make your life unnecessarily complicated. Learn what works for your circumstances, seek qualified guidance when needed, and make a genuine effort to follow through.
And remember something else: YOU CAN STILL ENJOY FOOD! I certainly do! In fact, the next major section of my book introduces some of my favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes—the meals I prepare at home because I want food that's delicious, practical, and compatible with my lifestyle.
SO, WHAT DO YOU SAY? LET'S EAT BETTER, GET MOVING, TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES, AND LIVE LIFE FULL THROTTLE!!!
