📖 6 Ways To Build Lethal Confidence Without Faking It
Excerpted and adapted from Lethal Confidence: Where It Comes From & How You Can Get It ... TOO! book by Bart Smith. Reprinted by Permission
Ever meet someone who walks into a room looking like they OWN the place? They speak confidently, make decisions without hesitation, tackle challenges head-on, and seem to know exactly what they're doing?
And you wonder, "HOW DO THEY DO THAT?"
Well, here's something I've learned over the years: REAL CONFIDENCE ISN'T SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO FAKE. IT'S SOMETHING YOU CAN DEVELOP, STRENGTHEN, AND EARN!
You don't need to pretend you're somebody you're not. You don't need to act superior, inflate your accomplishments, or convince everybody you're the greatest thing since sliced bread!
In my book, Lethal Confidence, I explain SIX essential sources of confidence that I've identified through decades of personal experience, observation, and accomplishments.
And guess what? YOU CAN START DEVELOPING THEM, TOO!
1. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING
Want to feel more confident about something? LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT IT!
Read books. Take classes. Ask questions. Research your subject. Study people who already know what they're doing.
Think about it. Would you feel confident repairing a car engine if you'd never opened the hood? Probably not!
But after weeks or months of learning and training? NOW WE'RE TALKING!
KNOWLEDGE REDUCES UNCERTAINTY AND GIVES YOU REAL REASONS TO FEEL CONFIDENT!
2. EXPERIENCE, PRACTICE & PARTICIPATION
You can read 100 books about swimming, but eventually you've got to get into the WATER!
Experience turns information into practical ability.
Start small. Practice regularly. Learn from mistakes. Observe your progress. Increase the difficulty as your skills improve. Whether you're learning to speak publicly, run a business, play an instrument, or pursue a new career, nothing replaces time spent actually DOING IT!
THE MORE EXPERIENCE YOU ACCUMULATE, THE MORE CONFIDENCE YOU CAN DEVELOP!
3. FAITH, COURAGE & BELIEF IN YOURSELF
Sometimes you have to believe in yourself BEFORE you've accumulated all the experience you need.
Otherwise, how would you ever begin?
Have faith in your ability to learn, grow, and improve. Find the courage to take that first reasonable step, even when you're uncertain about the outcome. And remember, courage doesn't mean the absence of fear. Sometimes it means moving forward despite feeling nervous!
BELIEVE YOU CAN LEARN TO DO IT. THEN GET BUSY PROVING IT TO YOURSELF!
4. PLANNING & PREPARATION
Want to eliminate some of that unnecessary worry and hesitation? MAKE A PLAN!
Break your goal into manageable steps. Determine what resources you'll need, what obstacles you might encounter, and how you'll respond if things don't go as expected. Preparation allows you to approach unfamiliar situations with greater understanding and direction.
I LOVE PLANNING! WHY? Because having a well-researched plan gives me something practical to follow!
THE BETTER PREPARED YOU ARE, THE LESS YOU HAVE TO RELY ON GUESSWORK!
5. HARD WORK & DETERMINATION
Here's where the rubber meets the road! You can have all the knowledge, dreams, plans, and positive thoughts in the world, but if you don't put in the WORK, what's going to happen? NOT MUCH!
Practice your craft. Develop your skills. Put in the hours. Measure your progress. Make improvements whenever necessary. Hard work doesn't guarantee success, but it gives you opportunities to develop abilities, gain experience, and earn accomplishments you can be proud of.
CONFIDENCE IS OFTEN THE REWARD FOR THE WORK YOU WERE WILLING TO PUT IN!
6. ATTITUDE, OPTIMISM & NO REGRETS!
And finally, let's talk about ATTITUDE! Sometimes things won't work out the way you planned. You'll make mistakes, experience rejection, or discover that your brilliant idea wasn't so brilliant after all! SO WHAT? YOU LEARNED SOMETHING!
Instead of beating yourself up, ask what you gained from the experience and what you'd do differently next time.
Adopt an attitude of "I GAVE IT MY BEST SHOT!" and use the lessons to prepare for your next opportunity.
A POSITIVE ATTITUDE WON'T GUARANTEE VICTORY, BUT IT CAN HELP YOU GET BACK IN THE GAME!
PUT ALL SIX TO WORK!
Here's where things get REALLY interesting!
These six confidence builders don't have to work independently. They can reinforce one another!
You BELIEVE in your idea, you RESEARCH it, you DEVELOP A PLAN, you PRACTICE, you WORK HARD, and you gain EXPERIENCE along the way.
That's the philosophy behind my Lethal Confidence Wheel™.
And as you repeat that process, you accumulate something no amount of pretending can replace: REAL EVIDENCE OF YOUR GROWING ABILITIES!
FINAL WORD
LETHAL CONFIDENCE ISN'T ABOUT ACTING LIKE YOU KNOW EVERYTHING. IT'S ABOUT DOING WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME MORE CAPABLE, PREPARED, EXPERIENCED, AND CONFIDENT!
You don't have to become an expert overnight. Start with something you want to accomplish, learn what you need to know, create a plan, and start practicing. With every new lesson, experience, and accomplishment, you'll have another reason to believe in yourself.
STOP PRETENDING. START PREPARING. GET TO WORK. AND BUILD YOUR OWN LETHAL CONFIDENCE!
