Wouldn't it be wonderful to wake up every morning feeling happy, confident, relaxed, and ready to take on the world? No unnecessary drama, no emotional roller coasters, and nobody ruining your perfectly good day before breakfast?
SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD TO ME!
Here's something I've learned over the years: Managing your emotions isn't just about calming yourself down when something goes wrong. It's about understanding your feelings, recognizing what affects them, developing personal guidelines, and taking action to maintain a healthier, happier life.
Think of your emotions as players on a winning sports team. Every player has a role, every position needs attention, and somebody has to manage the team. Guess who that somebody is?
YOU'RE THE MANAGER!
Here are five practical ways to become better at managing your emotions.
1. TAKE INVENTORY OF YOUR EMOTIONS
How can you manage something if you don't know what you're managing? Start by identifying the emotions you experience regularly. Happiness, anger, fear, disappointment, frustration, excitement, sadness, jealousy, gratitude, and confidence are just a few examples.
Ask yourself, "Which emotions do I experience most often? Which ones cause problems? Which ones contribute positively to my life?" Don't judge yourself for having difficult feelings. Instead, become more familiar with what you're experiencing and why.
KNOW YOUR EMOTIONAL TEAM BEFORE YOU TRY TO MANAGE IT!
2. IDENTIFY YOUR EMOTIONAL PATTERNS
Have you ever noticed that certain people, situations, or conversations seem to produce the same emotional reactions over and over? PAY ATTENTION! If you regularly become frustrated during certain conversations, anxious before particular events, or upset around certain individuals, those patterns deserve your attention.
Write them down. Look for similarities. Ask yourself what happened, how you responded, and whether a better response might be possible next time. The objective isn't to eliminate every unpleasant emotion. It's to understand your reactions well enough to make healthier decisions.
YOU CAN'T IMPROVE WHAT YOU REFUSE TO EXAMINE!
3. ESTABLISH YOUR OWN EMOTIONAL RULES
Every successful organization needs guidelines. Why should managing your emotions be any different?
Create a few personal rules that help you respond thoughtfully when emotions run high.
For example:
I will not yell or insult someone simply because I'm angry.
I will pause before responding to an upsetting message.
I will not allow an argument to become physically threatening.
I will communicate my boundaries respectfully.
I will take responsibility when my own behavior causes harm.
These aren't complicated rules, but following them consistently can make a meaningful difference. MAKE YOUR RULES. FOLLOW YOUR RULES. LIVE BY YOUR RULES!
4. TAKE ACTION INSTEAD OF LETTING PROBLEMS GROW
Sometimes an uncomfortable emotion is telling you that something needs your attention. Feeling overwhelmed? Examine your schedule and responsibilities. Feeling guilty? Consider whether an apology or corrective action is appropriate. Feeling frustrated in a relationship? Have an honest, respectful conversation.
Not every problem has an immediate solution, and some situations require professional support. But identifying realistic next steps can help you avoid feeling completely stuck. You don't have to solve every problem today. Just determine what you can reasonably do next. LESS RUMINATING. MORE THOUGHTFUL ACTION!
5. PROTECT YOUR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING EVERY DAY
Managing emotions isn't something you do only when you're upset. It's an ongoing responsibility! Develop routines that support your emotional well-being. Make time for enjoyable activities, healthy relationships, adequate rest, physical activity, and meaningful personal goals.
Establish boundaries when necessary. Recognize when you need a break. And remember that you can care about other people without taking responsibility for every emotion they experience. You're allowed to protect your time, energy, happiness, and peace of mind. TAKE CARE OF YOUR EMOTIONS THE WAY YOU TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING ELSE THAT MATTERS IN YOUR LIFE!
BONUS: THINK LIKE THE MANAGER OF A WINNING TEAM
Here's one more thought. A winning team doesn't become successful simply because somebody tells the players to do better. It takes preparation, observation, coaching, practice, adjustments, and a game plan. Your emotional well-being deserves that same thoughtful attention. Learn what works. Recognize what doesn't. Make adjustments when needed. And keep improving!
FINAL THOUGHT
Here's my advice: DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOUR EMOTIONS GET THE BEST OF YOU BEFORE YOU START MANAGING THEM! Take inventory of your feelings, recognize recurring patterns, develop personal guidelines, and establish safeguards that help protect your emotional well-being. Remember, the goal isn't to become emotionless or pretend everything is perfect. It's to experience life's emotions without unnecessarily harming yourself or others.
You may not be able to control everything life throws your way, but you can develop better ways to handle what comes next. MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS. PROTECT YOUR PEACE OF MIND. AND KEEP ENJOYING LIFE!
