One of the first questions a new YouTuber has to answer is simple: WHAT are you going to make videos about?

There is an old saying in sales: “Pick your niche and get rich.” I am not promising that choosing a niche will make you rich, but focusing on a clear category can make it much easier to create lots of videos for a specific audience.

When you are starting out, I like the idea of drilling deep before you go wide. Pick one or two categories you feel comfortable producing in volume. Build up that part of the channel first. Once you have momentum, you can branch into other areas that interest you.

Do You Have To Stay In One Niche Forever?

No. Sections and Playlists can help organize different categories on the same channel. That is exactly how I handle a wide variety of content. Different subjects can live inside clearly labeled sections and playlists so the viewer understands where everything belongs.

Still, if you are brand new, do not make your job unnecessarily difficult. Find one or two closely related categories you can create videos about again and again. Put your time and energy there until that section of your channel starts filling up with useful content.

Choose Something You Can Keep Talking About

The best niche is not simply the one someone tells you is popular. It is a subject you can keep producing around without running out of energy, curiosity or ideas.

Ask yourself: What could I make 50 videos about? What about 100? What do people already ask me about? What do I enjoy teaching, demonstrating, reviewing, discussing or doing?

Find that overlap between what YOU enjoy and what an audience wants to watch. Then start making videos. You can always expand later.
